My Baby Shower Gift – A Letter of Wisdom, Love and Honesty

My dear friend,

Christian parenting blogI wanted to get you a beautiful Pinterest worthy card and go buy you the double stroller and have it all wrapped up in the most beautiful baby shower paper ever, but life got in the way of doing that. I took my kids to a tea last night and got home really late with awesome memories and a heart full of love. So instead you are getting a check to buy the stroller and a typed letter instead of the card, and the other part of my gift is coming in a Birthday bag! Hey in the end we are celebrating a birth right?!! So this is huge for me because I can do this and be okay with it where a week ago I would have been beating myself up because I didn’t measure up…measure up to what – an impossible standard I and society put women under? But I praise God for His grace and mercy…for the fact that we don’t have to be perfect….that we can just rest each day in where he has us.

So my other gift to you my friend is the gift of some advice. You are going to be stretched in a way you have never been stretched before. And God is going to use it to encourage you to let go of things you didn’t even know you were holding on to. Each of us moms is gifted with treasures from heaven and if we aren’t careful we forget to truly treasure them.

We lose our joy due to impossible expectations we put on ourselves. So instead I say let go of everything that is holding you back and weighing you down from running the race God has set before you. Is it dirty laundry piling up that is stealing your joy? Is it the fact that God gave our kids free will and in spite of our best efforts they are not doing what we want them to do? Is it fear that we aren’t doing this amazing job right? You will feel like you are not enough and you will be right. And it’s okay. God will see you through if you surrender to Him, cherish and treasure your role as a mother and cut yourself a whole lot of slack.

I wish I had seen this 18 years ago but I’m so glad that I’m finally learning the lesson that God has been trying to teach me for 18 years. You are going to be such an amazing mom. You won’t be able to do it through your strength. You will have to call upon the Lord and humble yourself and reach out to the amazing people God places in your life when you need a hand. We are all here for each other and there is grace and freedom and beauty when we learn to let go and call out for help. You are such a beautiful person inside and out and I’m proud to call you my friend!

Well, I better run because I’ve got a check to write and a gift to shove in a birthday bag and probably some puppy pee to clean up. LOL

Love in Christ,
Joanna Mayes
