Ambushed by God's Love

Have you ever been ambushed by God’s love – by having an ordinary moment turn into the extraordinary?

God’s been doing that for me lately, drenching me in His love when I least expect it, but I’ve also been seeking it out more. Maybe that’s why I’m seeing it more?

Perhaps I’m seeing what’s always been there but I’ve finally slowed down enough to see it…not rushing right through it in my quest to pursue it.

Savoring the Now

My daughter Sydney and I were snuggled up in bed.  We had just finished reading Twas the Night Before Christmas and I had been very silly with her little Christmas elf.  He was being very naughty and kept interrupting Sydney as she was reading the story so she and I just kept bursting out into giggles.  The moment already seemed pretty special and I was in a place to savor the now instead of rushing through our time together.

I had bought a book, His Little Princess, a few years back and it had gotten lost in Sydney’s book cabinet (we have a LOT of books).

I randomly pulled it out and explained to Sydney, “These are letters from Father God to you. Did you know that you are His princess?”

Just for Me?

A look of wonder washed over her face.  I could tell it was a special moment for her.  She looked at me and whispered, “You mean God wrote those letters just for me?”

I wanted to be careful with my words, not doing anything to take away her feeling as if she was the most special little girl in the whole wide world.

“Well, God gave these words to a lady that felt called to put these letters into a book for little girls like you.  And God knew that on this day, you would see this book and on this day, you would read the letter we are about to read. So you see, other little girls may get this book but on different days and God knows the day that you need to see each letter from Him to you. On this day, this is what he wants to say to you.”

She looked at me in awe, handed me the book and sweetly pleaded, “Please read me the letter.” Her gentle request was delivered with all the reverence this moment deserved.

After I read the letter and the prayer that accompanied it, she carefully took the book in her small hands, laid it open on her chest, closed her eyes and hugged it closer to her.  It was a beautiful moment to witness her expression of gratitude for how beloved, treasured and secure her Father and King had just made her feel.

In that moment, I became seven-year-old Joanna and was feeling all of those things in unison with my daughter.

Identity in Christ

I read somewhere that by the time a child is seven years old their personality and sense of self is pretty much established. Much of who they are is formed based on their life experiences up to that point.  Their view of the world has shaped their emotional state and I can tell you from personal experience that I have found this to be so accurate.

The enemy of this world begins to wreak havoc and destruction on the lives of so many at such tender young ages.

God is not limited by space or time and He can go back in time to bring forth our true identity. He can transform us into the children of God He called us to be – unhindered by the wounds and lies of the enemy.

Each of us needs to know we are seen and that He truly hears us.

Don’t we all seek those moments where we know He is speaking directly to us?

Don’t we all need to know that we are truly special in His eyes.  Me, God is speaking directly to me.  Wow, I must be the most important little girl in the whole wide world!

My Daddy is the most important Daddy ever.  He is God!  He formed the earth.  He made me.  He loves me unconditionally!

Isn’t this what we are all crying out for?  If you can see the letters in the below pictures, please read from the place of the little girl He is speaking to and know that He is not limited by time or space. Perhaps you too were supposed to read those words on this day and to feel seen, spoken to, guided and cherished by your King and Father in Heaven.

Father God, raise me up to embrace my true identity untainted by the lies of the enemy. Transform me into who you created me to be. I call forth the identity of my children – their identity before pain and rejection began to conflict with their true identity. Heal their hearts and make them whole as only you can do. Allow them to walk in the fullness and freedom of their the identity you have called them to and give me the power to model this process for them.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
