Joanna's Recommended Christian Books & Authors

As the Lord has taken me on this spiritual journey through this season, this list of books and devotional are resources the Holy Spirit used as a major component of my spiritual growth. The amazing thing is He always independently took me to scriptures in the Word of God which always seemed to perfectly correlate with what I was reading.

Seek the Holy Spirit, pray before you read and don’t rely solely on books to teach you.

Accompany these books with study of scripture. I highly recommend a life application study Bible (NIV).

Note: In your personal time with the Lord, as you read His Holy Word, the Holy Spirit will give you certain Words that “jump out at you.” Listen to this prompting and Google the definitions and the Word will come to life for you.

What is truth? This has become the defining question of our time. But while everyone has an opinion, truth, it seems, is getting harder and harder to find. Perhaps that’s because we are searching for something when we should be looking for someone.

Truth has a name. Truth is not a river that changes with the cultural currents but a rock and the cornerstone of all we are and ever dream to be. Adamant will be an anchor for your soul in a raging sea of opinions, giving you a clear sense of direction in a wandering world.

Author: Ann Voskamp

Christian writer and blogger Ann Voskamp is the author of the book One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are. Her Biblical wisdom on giving thanks has revolutionized the way I view everyday life and brought me into a season of unconditional gratitude of God’s goodness.

She describes herself as a “wife to the farmer and mama to seven.” Ann is also the author of NYTimes Bestsellers: The Broken Way and The Greatest Gift.

She believes in the The Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed. Her beliefs are non-denominational, evangelical (believing in the necessity of salvation in Christ), Bible centered (embracing the Bible as God’s infallible and complete message to all people) and grace-clinging.

Author: Ann Voskamp

New York Times best-selling author Ann Voskamp sits at the edge of her life and all of her own unspoken brokenness and asks: What if you really want to live abundantly before it’s too late? What do you do if you really want to know abundant wholeness? This is the one begging question that’s behind every single aspect of our lives — and one that The Broken Way rises up to explore in the most unexpected ways.

This one’s for the lovers and the sufferers. For those whose hopes and dreams and love grew so large it broke their willing hearts. This one’s for the busted ones who are ready to bust free, the ones ready to break molds, break chains, break measuring sticks, and break all this bad brokenness with an unlikely good brokenness. You could be one of the Beloved who is broken — and still lets yourself be loved. You could be one of them, one who believes freedom can be found not only beyond the fear and pain, but actually within it. You could discover and trust this broken way — the way to not be afraid of broken things.

Author: A.W. Tozer

Mystery of the Holy Spirit is a collection of sermons revealing Tozer’s prophetic insight into this topic. Tozer’s critique of the church is as relevant today as when he first preached it from his pulpit in Chicago more than a half-century ago. In an era when many extremes are being promotes in the name of the Holy Spirit, Dr. Tozer’s cautious warnings are more than apropos–they are an urgent call to action.

The 27th book in the best–selling Pure Gold Classics line, Tozer on the Holy Spirit is a follow–up to the groundbreaking Fellowship of The Burning Heart. Best–selling author and editor James Snyder has compiled some of Tozer’s greatest works on the Holy Spirit. This book includes photographs and a CD of selected Tozer sermons. During his lifetime, Tozer pastored several Christian and Missionary Alliance churches and served as editor of Alliance Life, the monthly denominational publication for the C&MA. Tozer authored more than 40 books, a tremendous accomplishment for a man who never received a formal theological education. The presence of God was his classroom. His notebooks and tools consisted of prayer, God’s Word, and the writings of early Christians and theologians―the Puritans and great men of faith.

Author: A.W. Tozer

A.W. Tozer earned a legendary reputation as a prophetic voice, and he continues to be a best-selling author half a century after his death. Worship was his focus and his passion. Many have written about worship, but Tozer surpassed them all in simple passion and supreme purpose. Compiled from material never before published, The Purpose of Man: Designed to Worship presents Tozer’s systematic teaching on worship, the subject close to his heart.

One of the first in evangelical circles to call attention to the doctrine of worship, Tozer knew worship as the purpose of man and the expectation of God. His thoughts on this subject were deeply rooted in biblical doctrine and historic writings, blending Scripture with some of the great devotional writers throughout history. Like sitting down with Tozer, The Purpose of Man delivers the soul cry of Tozer on worship and will inspire readers to not only understand worship, but also experience it in his or her own heart. What Tozer offers on the subject of worship will challenge you to reconsider your life’s priorities.

“Worship is man’s full reason for existence. Worship is why we are born and why we are born again.” — A. W. Tozer

Author: Matt Chandler

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to deepen and strengthen their love for the Lord and His saving grace. The gospel in and at it’s fullest is unpacked and exposed in a way that inspires a genuine affection for Jesus.

Matt Chandler is the lead pastor of teaching at The Village Church, a Southern Baptist[1] church in Flower Mound, Texas, and the President of the Acts 29 Network. As of October 2012, Chandler was in the top five of the leading podcasts on iTunes. Chandler’s first book, co-authored with Jared Wilson, The Explicit Gospel, was released in 2012. In it he explains what the gospel is and how it has been misunderstood.

Chandler believes in Christian hedonism, a phrase coined by John Piper, teaches that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him” and that God’s highest pursuit (“his glory”) and man’s deepest and most durable joy come together in one pursuit—namely, the pursuit of satisfaction in God.

Author: Retah McPherson

The motor vehicle accident in 2004 was the start of a supernatural journey of faith for the McPherson family. Retah’s son, Aldo (then 12 years old), suffered a serious brain injury and was in a coma for several months. While Aldo was in a coma, he had a supernatural experience: he was in heaven, saw God, the angels, Moses and Abraham.

Aldo came back with this message: “Mommy, I need to tell the world that Jesus is truly alive!” A Message of Hope is the third book in a series wherein Aldo and Retah testify of the road of faith and hope their family has been walking on with God since the accident. Aldo’s letters written in his own handwriting, as inspired by the Holy Spirit (or Wisdom, as Aldo calls Him), tell of his encounters with angels, demons and the fierce spiritual battle they were engaged in.

It brings a sobering realization that what happens in the unseen spiritual realm has a much greater effect on our lives than we think. “Sometimes our circumstances are so overwhelming that we can lose all perspective and hope in the battle. Then we often give up and start agreeing with the lies of enemy instead of standing up and fighting for our Promised Land. But how do you fight if you don’t know the nature or strategy of the enemy? Because of all that we have endured, I can say today with unshakable conviction: God is faithful. You can trust Him; and in Him there is always hope!” – Retah McPherson.

Author: A.W. Tozer

The Warfare of the Spirit discusses the persistent struggle against the evil forces of the world, the flesh, and even the deceiving ways of Satan.

Breaking down the spiritual warfare that is going on all around us, in both the physical and spiritual realms, Tozer examines many aspects of the human experience that can potentially damage us spiritually—like concerns about money, social status, conflict with others, or even confusing the meaning Christmas. Tozer also unapologetically states the dangers of adhering to a theology that absolves the unbeliever of any punishment. For if there is no hell, he warns, there is no heaven either.

Beginning this book with a triumphant call to battle, A. W. Tozer inspires the believer to seek and destroy the evil forces working in this world. This book empowers its reader to eradicate complacency and sloth and live actively for the Lord every day.
